Like Gibbons, he also had a similar long and signature ZZ Top look with a long beard. Hill died on July 28, 2021, because of chronic bursitis.

Frank Beard: Frank is the iconic drummer of ZZ Top and he is one of the ZZ Top trio. However, he joined a little late like Hill, he was with Top when its first album was released. The interesting fact about Frank is  Ironically, he is the only member of the ZZ Top band who doesn’t have a beard.

Besides the Gibbons-Hill-Beard trio, there were three others who played for ZZ Top in its first year, bassist/organist Lanier Greig and drummer Dan Mitchell. Dan replaced Greig and Beard replaced Dan in the first year of its foundation. It also had Billy Ethridge as a bassist for a small period of time from 1969 to 1970. After that there was no break among the trio, they continued to work together until Beard’s death in 2021. Bassist Elwood Francis joined ZZ Top right after Beard was forced to leave the show due to his hip injury at the Village Commons in New Lenox, Illinois. Later, Beard himself requested ZZ Top to keep Francis with the band, and since then Francis has remained as part of the ZZ Top with the signature beard as other team members.

ZZ Top’s Iconic Discography: Music Beyond Time

ZZ Top’s debut album is just called ZZ Top’s First Album. It was a very raw and rough album with unmistakably catchy songs. The album includes blues-rock jams, introducing its listeners to their signature boogie sound. The standout tracks, such as “Brown Sugar,” show hints of their future potential. Their second album Rio Grande Mud (1972) is the album that sharpens Top’s sound and tightens their groove. While the first album was raw blues, the second one marked the transition to a more polished rock music that complements the band itself and gives its authentic musical style that is known around the world today.

However, among the best of ZZ Top comes their third album released in 1973. It was a breakthrough that got them early success and developed its entire character which includes the successful song “La Grange”. However, the band did not experience mainstream success until 1983, after the release of arguably the most successful “Eliminator”. This remains the most iconic album featuring the perfect synthesis of blues, hard rock, and the emerging synthesizer sounds of the ’80s. The songs like “Gimme All Your Lovin’,” “Sharp Dressed Man,” and “Legs,” became world popular. To date, these are the most recognizable tracks that define the aura of ZZ Top. Afterburner (1985) was another smashing hit that took the synth-heavy style of Eliminator even further despite the fact that it could not match the popularity of its predecessor.

In the 90s ZZ Top shifted its musical style due to the shifting scene in the musical landscape and adapted to rock swagger with the album “Recycler (1990)”. Unfortunately, they could not carry on with their 80s-like commercial success after that even though Mescalero was praised for its authenticity and stripped-down blues rock sound. The album showcased ZZ Top’s ability to evolve without losing their distinctive musical style.
