Alex Warren Holds the Crown – Again
It’s been close to half a year since Alex Warren first cracked the Billboard Hot 100 with “Ordinary,” and this week, he’s commanding not only the No. 1 spot for a consecutive second time but his eighth time overall at No. 1. With 24 weeks within the chart and with a Platinum certification, “Ordinary” sits exactly dead center within blockbuster country. What’s keeping it there? Strong streaming, heavy radio rotation, and the kind of emotional songwriting that clearly speaks to a broad audience. The pairing by Warren’s sensitive lyrics with Ari Yaron’s classy production keeps paying dividends.
Biggest Moves: Golden Shines Bright, Bieber Solidifies His Comeback
Directly below the top, HUNTR/X’s “Golden” with EJAE, Audrey Nuna, and REI AMI takes a concerted jump, from No. 4 to No. 2. In five weeks, it’s gone from a subtle debut at No. 81 to a Hot 100 No. 2. What’s powering that rocket ship? It’s a week’s largest streaming gain, and a genre-blending pop-R&B record holding tight with Gen Z listeners on TikTok and Reels.
At No. 3, Justin Bieber’s “Daisies” holds steady after debuting at No. 2 last week. It doesn’t go up, but its presence is anything but stagnant. The song recorded the week’s biggest airplay gain, so its better days on the chart are likely to come. With an all-star team of songwriters and producers behind it, “”Daisies”” continues to be the kind of pop song that evolves with time.
Country’s Continued Crossover
Morgan Wallen doesn’t look to be slowing down any. He lays claim to a remarkable five songs among the Top 25 this week. The Tate McRae collab “What I Want” falls to No. 4 but still achieves a No. 1 peak and ten-straight weeks charting. Also among his Hot 100 stable are “Just In Case” (No. 5), “I’m The Problem” (No. 11), “I Got Better” (No. 25), and “20 Cigarettes” (No. 57).
It’s not Morgan by himself. His Post Malone collaboration, “I Had Some Help,” tops out at No. 17 after over a year on the chart, already five-times Platinum. The country’s pop shift has progressed from shock story to standard fixture. Pop stars are no longer just reaching country radio, but they’re topping mainstream pop streaming, as well.
Long Runners: Teddy Swims, Shaboozey, Gaga & Mars Keep Fighting
Let’s talk longevity. Teddy Swims’ “Lose Control” is in its 101st week (No. 7 this week). That’s rarified air. With a peak to No. 1 and multi-Platinum status, the song’s longevity approaches Adele-like status.
Right behind comes “A Bar Song (Tipsy)” by Shaboozey, holding steady at No. 8 during its 67th week. Vintage country trap with a reference to J-Kwon? The unexpected combination appears to be a knockout. It doesn’t hurt that Shaboozey has another song, “Good News,” to its credit, rising from No. 24 to No. 22.
Piano-power ballad by Lady Gaga & Bruno Mars, titled “Die With A Smile” (No. 10), still registers almost a year after release. With smooth production by Bruno, together with Gaga and Andrew Watt, this one looks to possibly still have life left considering that hype from award season begins to brew.
Rising Stars & New Entries
Thanks to Alex Warren, again, both for his original song, “Ordinary,” and his new release, “Eternity,” debuting at No. 16. He clearly doesn’t qualify as a one-hit wonder. Working with his collaborating producer, Ari Yaron, and songwriters from his original song, “Ordinary,” Warren seeks to carve a legitimate niche among the alt-pop singer-songwriter universe.
Another breakthrough story belongs to HUNTR/X, who’s futuristic brand of pop just keeps going gangbusters. The act has four songs within the Top 40—“Golden” (No. 2), “Your Idol” (No. 12), “How It’s Done” (No. 19), and “What It Sounds Like” (No. 31). It’s irresistibly clear their collaborative chemistry with Republic Records, along with a stable of ebullient producers, is a match made within pop paradise.
Third-gen K-pop stars are still a global attraction. On TWICE’s end, they enter with “Strategy” at No. 92, as members JEONGYEON, JIHYO & CHAEYOUNG continue to ascend with “Takedown” (No. 76). With those entries, it’s evident K-pop’s third-gen
Tyler, the Creator Floods the Chart
Let’s be talking dominance: Tyler, the Creator drops seven new songs this week, all from what appears to be a surprise new release. “Big Poe” leads at No. 33, but “Sugar On My Tongue” (No. 41), “Ring Ring Ring” (No. 44), “Sucka Free” (No. 48), “Stop Playing With Me” (No. 51), “Mommanem” (No. 54), and “I’ll Take Care Of You” (No. 55) are all new to our page. This is classic Tyler—the sonic experimentation, funk-laced rap productions, and deeply personal songwriting, all held together with cult sensibility that inexplicably breeds mainstream clout.
It’s a unique feat and a pretty good sign that record releases are still important, especially ones curated by an actual auteur.
Other Notables: Comebacks, Crossovers & Chart Surprises
- Back with a re-entry into “Mama, I’m Coming Home” (No. 49) and a new entry into “Crazy Train” at No. 46. Classic rock is in fashion at present, and that could be stimulated by syncs or virals from recently.
- Billie Eilish continues to be a generational artist with “Birds of a Feather” (No. 18) and “Wildflower” (No. 65) both still going strong to the chart.
- BLACKPINK returns with “Jump” at No. 53 in its second week. With their global fanbase and streaming clout, it might ascend with a boost from video performance and playlisting pushes.
- Charli XCX’s “Party 4 U” returns to our lists once more (No. 83), proving cult pop stardom is being rewarded with slow burn hits.
Looking Ahead
Summer releases are heating up and artists are dropping albums, from Tyler, the Creator to surprising singles by Morgan Wallen and Justin Bieber, August appears to be a very competitive month. We anxiously wait to see if “Golden” dethrones “Ordinary” or Bieber’s airplay surge delivers it a landslide, but with absolute certainty, it’s just that the Billboard Hot 100 remains the most dramatic place within music.
See you next week.
