Over the years of American music evolution and shifts, The Temptations have remained one of the most recognized and powerful voices. With a distinct style and presence, they have emerged from the merger of two vocal acts in local streets of Detroit city. The Primes flaunted featured members like Eddie Kendricks and Paul Williams while The Distants presented led by Otis Williams. The merger gave way to some delays and name for the group, initially called The Elgins but finally settling on The Temptations. Although now the group is ran by Otis Williams, he alone is the remaining and only original member.
Like many other artists and groups in the 1960s era of music and entertainment, The Temptations did face their fair share of difficulties in establishing themsleves as mainstream singers. During the year of 1963 to 1964, the started releasing tracks one after the other. However, not until 1964 did they unlock their rewards. Kendricks bold decision to lead vocals on “The Way You Do the Things You Do” proving to be a game changing moment for them in the industry and the start of some real competitiveness. That led them into further collaborations with Smokey Robinson strengthening their bond with Motown.
Their golden era began with the group’s classic five lineup- David Ruffin, Eddie Kendricks, Paul Williams, Melvin Franklin, and Otis Williams. The Temptations achieved crossover success with “My Girl” (1965), “Ain’t Too Proud to Beg” (1966), and “I Wish It Would Rain” (1967) winning both black and white audiences. Exquisite harmonies, showmanship, and stylish appeal cemented Wins by The Temptations. The contrasting taste of grit in Ruffin’s voice to “Kendricks’” high notes and to Franklin’s deep bass created a dynamic blend.
The shifting under producer Norman Whitfield in 1968 brought along Dennis Edwards as Ruffin’s Replacement. With Edwards, the group began to pursue a new direction. Desproducing Psychedelic soul with tracks such as “Cloud Nine,” “Ball of Confusion,” and “Papa Was a Rollin’ Stone” This era, much like America in the late 1960’s, was socially and politically tumultuous. With “Cloud Nine” winning the groups first Grammy, this solidified their place in the forefront of soul music along the lines of their contemporaries.
Like many musical acts, The Temptations suffered multiple lineup changes starting in the 1970s. Both Paul and Eddie left in 1971, and Paul tragically succumbed to death in 1973. With Richard Street, Damon Harris, Glenn Leonard, and Ali-Ollie Woodson, the group continued to evolve. They also put out hit songs “Masterpiece,” “Treat Her Like A Lady,” and “Lady Soul” despite internal conflict and chaos.
There is also loss in The Temptations story. Ruffin, Kendricks, Franklin, and many other members died in the following decades adding to the temporal grief for the group. Regardless, the group continued to push on forward. They were introduced to a new generation in 1998 through a TV mini series which was based on Otis Williams’ biography.
Now, The Temptations still record and perform while being led by Otis Williams. With over 60 years spent in the industry, the group’s impact shapes their music as well as the countless R&B, pop, and soul artists who come after them.
