The Hollies Band: A Biography of a British Rock & Pop Band

The Hollies band is a British rock and pop musical band established by childhood friend Alan Clarke and Graham Nash back in 1962. The group has a very distinctive three-part vocal harmony style which builds their image around the world, and this is what made their place in the rock and pop scene. Alan and Graham shared a passion for music from an early age and performed together in several local bands which eventually inspired them to start the Hollies. This Manchester based band rose to fame in 1964 with the album Stay with The Hollies. From then they never had to look back.

Birth of The Hollies: A Legendary Musical Group From Manchester

High school best friends Alan Clarke and Graham Nash started The Hollies in December of 1962. Earlier, both had a passion for music from an early age. The main idea took form when they started to perform together in the early 1950s in local clubs during the skiffle craze and their dream of starting a band came true. In 1962. Ironically, the duo started the band as a Merseybeat-type group, which is a British musical genre based in Liverpool.

In the beginning the band’s name was The Deltas which they later changed to The Hollies in December 1962. The adaptation of the name The Hollies happened during the Oasis Club in Manchester performance. There have been rumors about the name but later Alan made it clear that it was inspired by Buddy Holly and Christmas. Buddy Holly was the icon for both Alan and Graham and his music influenced the duo throughout their life, forming the foundation of The Hollies’s musical reverberation.

In the five decades, The Hollies band have given numerous hits and their early success came in 1964 with the album “Stay with The Hollies (1964)”.  The early sound of the Hollies was characterized by very energetic rhythms and compact harmonies. The sound tracks then stood out among the British Invasion bands throughout the 60s. But as the time passed they grew more confident and The Hollies started to compose their original music. Back then, Clark, Nash and Hicks wrote their lyrics under the pseudonym L. Ransford.

The Hollies Band Members

Alan Clarke and Graham Nash being the founding members of the band, the group reshuffled quite a few times. Most importantly and unfortunately Nash left the band in 1968 and joined Crosby, Stills and Nash. However, he occasionally joined the band and performed quite several times. Throughout the time The Hollies have been joined by some amazing and creative musicians which made the band successful and one of the two longest performing bands in the UK.

Allan Clarke: Lead Vocals and Harmonica

Allan Clarke was the lead vocalist and played Harmonica in the Hollies band. He is the founding member and his charismatic voice was behind most of The Hollies biggest hits for decades. Allan had a very powerful voice that sang soulfully that defined the band’s signature sound  and remained as the cornerstone of the band’s success.

Graham Nash: Rhythm Guitar and Vocals

Another founding member of the Hollies who has a huge contribution to the iconic harmonies of the group’s musical evolution. He mostly played rhythm guitars and sang along with Allan for his 6 years journey at The Hollies. With an enigmatic high pitch vocal and songwriting prowess Nash worked like an architect for the Hollies.He wrote one of their masterpieces “Carrie Anne.” After his short career at the Hollies he left the band in 1968 to join Crosby, Still & Nash and continued to build his legacy. However, he sometimes joined as guests at The Hollies and performed.

Vic Steele: Lead Guitar

Vic Steele is the original lead guitarist of The Hollies band, who played a key role during the band’s formation and helped build the band’s image with his amazing guitar skill. Vic started his journey with the Hollies when it was called The Deltas. He helped the band to develop its early music that laid the foundation of its enduring musical style. In 1963 he left the band and Tony Hicks joined as his replacement.

Eric Haydock: Bassist

Eric Haydock is another original member who played bass and helped The Hollies create its own magical rock and roll musical sound. The world knew him for his pioneering use of the six-string Fender Bass VI. Haydock was also considered to be one of the greatest bass players of his time. His unique bass lines gave a rich and dynamic element to the music during the band’s early years. He was replaced in 1966 by Barnie Calvert after a controversy.

Don Rathbone: Drums

In the early days of The Hollies, Don Rathbone played drums and he was the first drummer in the original lineup. Just one year later, in 1963, Don was replaced by Bobby Elliott. In the formation of the band and structuring the band’s core musical style, if not like his successor, Don also had a great contribution.

Tony Hicks: Lead Guitar

Tony Hicks is the lead guitarist of the Hollies band. He is one of the longest performing members of the band who brought sophistication and flair to The Hollies’ music specially with his magical riffs and innovative guitar arrangements. Hicks joined the band in 1963 replacing Vic Steels and remained as a core member. Hicks does not only play guitar, he also contributed to the lyrics as a songwriter which shaped the band’s songs during both the pop and psychedelic phases of this legendary band.

Bobby Elliott: Drums

Since 1963, Bobby Elliott remains one of the most influential core members of the Hollies band. With his energetic and creative drumming, Bobby quickly became one of iconic drummers in the rock n roll music scene and changed the musical game for the band. As the most respected drummers in the music industry, his rhythmic innovation added vitality to the band and its music. He has earned acclaimaton as a standout percussionist throughout the world.

Terry Sylvester: Rhythm Guitar and Vocals

When  Graham Nash left the Hollies in 1969, Terry Sylvester joined in and kept doing what Nash was doing–playing rhythm guitar and helping with vocal harmony. After taking Nash’s place he added flares to the band with his smooth harmonies and strong rhythm guitar. He helped maintain the band’s vocal harmony tradition during their post-Nash era. He helped the band with  hits like “He Ain’t Heavy, He’s My Brother.”
