Sheppard Band Biography
Who are Sheppard? Sheppard are Brisbane-based Australian indie pop sibling group who achieved international sing-along acclaim for their catchy hooks and layered vocals with “Geronimo”.
The name is Sheppard and the origin story begins with Brisbane-born and Port Moresby-raised sibling George, Amy, and Emma Sheppard who were later brought up in Brisbane.
The group’s location and year of birth in music was 2009 in Brisbane when Brisbane-raised sibling George was asked to team up to make a last-minute college song project and the group idea was hatched.
George was born on 21 October 1987 and Amy was born on 22 September 1990 and were both later brought up in Brisbane after early schooling in Port Moresby. Emma learnt bass at School in Brisbane and joined the group in 2011, rounding out sibling core that constitutes the group to date.
The family background is phenomenally hands on for a modern group. The early grind support came from parents Greg and Linda who took management roles and set up the independent Empire of Song label so the children could get music out on their schedule.
Education influenced their craft in a hands on way. Amy graduated in music at TAFE Queensland, George did a year in Sydney drifting around acting roles before heading home, and Emma perfected her musicianship in at-school groups that flowed directly into the group.
From those small beginnings came rapid career milestones. Sheppard released an independent EP in 2012 and cleaned up the festival circuit overseas, proving that their harmonies were just as strong overseas as they were locally.
“Let Me Down Easy” got the buzz building at home and “Geronimo” broke loose in early 2014, reigning for three consecutive weeks at number one on the ARIA Singles Chart and earning multi-platinum certification.
The debut album Bombs Away was released in July 2014 and went to number two in Australia and broke the US singles chart with touring that opened for Keith Urban and Meghan Trainor. Big awards followed.
Sheppard won the 2014 ARIA for Best Group, claimed the APRA for “Geronimo” in 2015, and claimed a number one album in 2018 with Watching the Sky. Along the way they sang the AFL Grand Final halftime in 2020 and in April 2024 mounted an unprecedented show on the Great Barrier Reef, which seemed a perfect metaphor for their bright-lit, coastal sound.
The group has also adopted Eurovision’s stage of national selection in 2019, where they came third with “On My Way.” There have been some crucial life events that have shaped sound and strategy. George has had vocal surgery in 2019, which prompted a reset and a more deliberate approach to songwriting.
The band revealed a song-a-month schedule for the duration of 2020 that led to their third album Kaleidoscope Eyes in 2021. The group migrated to Nashville in 2023 and aimed for a greater foothold in the U.S. while maintaining the home base identifier.
The group released their fourth album Zora in 2024 and continued to grow their footprint on stage, including a national tour in Australia and a club crossover with Jolyon Petch on “Sunshine.” Through changes in the lineup they maintained the sibling core at the heart, now augmented with drummer Jon Butterworth.
The trajectory is indistinguishable from a modern indie triumph story. The family operation becomes a chart act, expands to be an international touring act, and just keeps reinvesting in the craft of song.
The strand that weaves name, origin, education, career milestones, successes, and life events is a simple one. Sheppard pen big anthems for communal moments and they continue to find bigger rooms to sing them.
