American avant-garde funk-metal band Primus was formed in the Bay Area, El Sobrante, California, in 1984 and is celebrated for their mischievous musical style and quirky videos. Primus blends funk, metal, and progressive rock in their music. Their music has been described as “absurdist funk-rock” and “prog-rock self-indulgence”. Primus’s music has also been described as a mix of funk metal and experimental rock. Some say their music is similar to “Rush with the sensibility and humor of Frank Zappa”. Actualy, the style of music of Primus is generally termed as alternative/indie.

Primus’s songs often take the basslines at the center stage. This musical style gives their music unique characteristics. Primus is also unique with their quirky and offbeat lyrics. Les Claypool, the Primus founder’s songwriting is often characterized by his dark humor and storytelling abilities.
Primus’s debut single is John the Fisherman. Their first studio album, Frizzle Fry, was released in 1990. Primus released their fourth album, Tales from the Punchbowl, in 1995. The album contained the band’s most successful single to date, Wynona’s Big Brown Beaver. The song won the Grammy Award for Best Hard Rock Performance in 1996.

The most popular song by Primus is My Name Is Mud. Jerry Was a Race Car Driver is another popular song by the band. The band comprises Les Claypool, the vocalist and bassist, Larry “Ler” LaLonde, the guitarist, and John Hoffman, the drummer.
At first, Primus was strictly an underground band. However, their cult snowballed in the years between their third and fourth albums. Before releasing their 1989 live LP, Suck on This, and their 1990 debut studio album, Frizzle Fry, the band saw multiple lineup changes. The following year, in 1991, the band released their gold-selling album, Sailing the Seas of Cheese. Their heady blend of art-rock, funk, and heavy metal has received much favour from the mass audience. The album found mainstream success with alt-rock hit single Jerry Was a Race Car Driver. Their albums Pork Soda (1993) received platinum, and Tales from the Punchbowl (1995) received gold certifications. Then the band toured for a year that included a headlining spot on Lollapalooza 1993. The band leader Claypool then revived his Prawn Song record label in 1994 and released a reunion record by Primus’ original lineup under the name Sausage.

Primus announced parting ways with their drummer, Tim Alexander, in the summer of 1996. Brain “Brain” Mantia, replaced him. Mantia made his debut with the band on The Brown Album, which was released in the summer of 1997. In 1918, the EP Rhinoplasty was released. A year later, in 1999, Primus returned with its album Antipop. After its release, citing creative stagnation, the band ceased operations until it re-formed as a touring entity in 2010.
Primus released their seventh album, Green Naugahyde, in 2011. Three years later, the band released its album, Primus & the Chocolate Factory with Fungi Ensemble. The band reunited with drummer Alexander in this album to cover the iconic soundtrack to the 1971 film Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. In 2017, the band released another literary-influenced album, The Desaturating Seven. This album was inspired by Italian author Ul de Rico’s children’s book The Rainbow Goblins. The album included the single The Seven.
Primus issued their first new music in five years with the politically charged three-song EP Conspiranoia in 2022. The EP featured an 11-minute title track. Two years later, Primus contributed Pablo’s Hippos to the three-way Sessanta E.P.P.P., which featured one new song from each band, in anticipation of a tour with Puscifer and A Perfect Circle.
