Nine Inch Nails Biography

Who are Nine Inch Nails in one line? Nine Inch Nails are Trent Reznor’s ongoing industrial rock project, currently a musical collaboration with Atticus Ross.

Nine Inch Nails began as the project of Michael Trent Reznor, who was born on May 17, 1965, in New Castle, Pennsylvania, and was raised primarily in nearby Mercer when his parents were divorced when he was a youth, and now co led by Atticus Matthew Cowper Ross, who was born on January 16, 1968, in London.

The family background of Mr. Reznor has been reported to be rock steady and small town, with grandparents who encouraged his earlier classical piano lessons and a streak of obstinacy that sent him for the synthesizer and recording equipment and local rock bands.

He acted in high school plays and sat in on regional and college bands and was a college student at Allegheny for a short time before switching studios for classrooms. By the end of the eighties he was living in Cleveland and was working nights at Right Track Studios as an assistant engineer and, in his estimation, a janitor with keys who worked off time to lay down tracks for the songs that would be Nine Inch Nails.

He called the project thus because the name was memorable and simple looking on a T shirt, thereafter he signed a contract with TVT Records and released Pretty Hate Machine in 1989, a collision between jutting pop hooks and razored electronics that hung around on the charts for over two years.

Public wrangling with TVT over control sent him to Interscope and his own Nothing imprint and towards a harder sound that was documented on the Broken EP in 1992 and, most famously, The Downward Spiral in 1994, tracked at the legendary Cielo Drive house in Los Angeles.

Those records make Nine Inch Nails a live phenomenon, with a muddy drenched Woodstock 94 breakthrough and a Self Destruct tour that married mayhem and meticulous visuals. In his personal life he married Mariqueen Maandig in 2009 and co-founded How to Destroy Angels with her and Atticus Ross, the collaborator who would be at the core of the next chapter.

Reznor and Ross shifted some of their creative emphasis to film, scoring The Social Network, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Gone Girl, and countless others and earning an Academy Award and a Golden Globe, while Nine Inch Nails reemerged stagebound in 2013 with Hesitation Marks and a brash new production lexicon.

The slim trilogy followed between 2016 and 2018, with Not the Actual Events, Add Violence, and Bad Witch forswearing shock and emphasis for intensity, texture, and nerve. Nine Inch Nails were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2020 and, in the first pandemic spring, released Ghosts V and Ghosts VI as a gesture of reconnection.

The live group that bears these songs has shifted across years, yet the longtime core of Robin Finck and Alessandro Cortini and, for the 2025 Peel It Back tour, drummer Josh Freese, captures the habit that he has as bringing competent hands back into the room.

In 2024 Reznor and Ross opened With Teeth, a multimedia company launching new projects in story, a label, and a festival, and in 2025 Nine Inch Nails is scoring Tron: Ares with new original songs under the band imprint, blending lines between albums, soundtracks, and world building.
