N.W.A, which stands for Niggaz Wit Attitudes, is widely accepted as an American hip-hop group founded in 1987 in Compton, California. N.W.A is considered one of the forerunners of ‘Gangsta Rap’, a music genre that talked about life in the ghetto as it was, and systemic racism and police brutality, amongst other issues. In spite of receiving a lot of hate and being banned from the mainstream media, they went on to become one of the most important and progressive groups in the hip hop industry.
The remaining members of the original group Eazy-E, Dr. Dre, Ice Cube, Arabian Prince, DJ Yella, and later MC Ren, form what is considered to be one of the most iconic hip-hop groups of all time. Eazy-E was the driving force in creating the hip-hop group as he set up Ruthless Records with manager Jerry Heller and signed on Dr. Dre and Ice Cube associated with C.I.A. Subsequently, Arabian Prince and DJ Yella added to N.W.A as the group’s Producer and DJ. In 1987, MC Ren completed the group’s transformation and added to its prominence for the mark they wanted to leave on history.
In 1987, the compilation album N.W.A. and the Posse was released, showcasing the first traces of the group’s aggressive musical style. It was, however, their 1988 debut studio album, Straight Outta Compton, that became a cultural phenomenon. The album featured three monumental songs that served as its introduction; Straight Outta Compton, Fuck tha Police, and Gangsta Gangsta. These songs not only introduced the group’s unfiltered sound to the world but also their politically charged narrative. Despite condemnation from the FBI, the track Fuck tha Police went on to become an anthem of resistance, symbolizing the frustration of youth against systemic oppression.
Ice Cube’s departure from the group in 1989 due to royalty disputes marked the start of internal tensions. His departure didn’t dampen his rise to stardom, as he started a successful solo career with AmeriKKKa’s Most Wanted. However, this did ignite a fierce lyrical battle with his former group. N.W.A responded with diss tracks like Real Niggaz and Message to B.A. This was met by Ice Cube’s blistering rebuttal in No Vaseline.
N.W.A’s second and last album, Niggaz4Life, released in 1991, not only debuted at the top spot on the Billboard 200 Chart but it also marked the emergence of Dr. Dre’s G-funk production style. The group, however, soon fell apart due to increasing personal and professional disagreements. Dr. Dre’s departure from Ruthless Records to co-found Death Row Records with Suge Knight sparked an infamous conflict with Eazy-E, who retaliated with Real Muthaphuckkin G’s. In the meantime, MC Ren and DJ Yella remained active and released separate works.
Eazy-E’s shocking death, due to complications from AIDS in 1995, effectively ended the first chapter of N.W.A’s timeline. While still coming to terms with his loss, the remaining members slowly worked towards reconciling their differences and collaborated on tracks like Chin Check and Hello in the late 90s and early 2000s.
The legacy of the group was solidified when their story was told in the 2015 biopic Straight Outta Compton. It became a major blockbuster hits, introducing N.W.A’s mark on history to a younger audience. N.W.A was also inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2016, cementing their legacy alongside other notable musicians. They received The Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2024 for the foundational part they played in evolving hip hop, as well as, giving a voice the marginalized communities.
