L L Cool J Biography, Top Songs, Discography, Albums & Awards

LL Cool J, or “Ladies Love Cool James” as the name expands, is an American rapper, born on the 14th of January, 1968. His early years were spent in Bay shore and Long Island New York where he was already gaining stardom for his rapping skills in the 1980s New York City Hip hop scene. He made his first demo tape at the age of 10 which was made possible by a jazz musician who happened to be his grandfather. LL was able to buy a drum machine because of tax returns which motivated his musical passions even further.

In 1984, with Def jam Recordings being formed, LL Cool J became the youngest artist to sign with the company in the year of its formation. He also produced the underground hit “I Need a Beat”. Along with that, he released his first album named “Radio” which was a result of working with Rick Rubin and topped the charts too selling over a million copies.

LL followed up with Bigger and Deffer (1987), which included hits like “I’m Bad” and the groundbreaking rap ballad “I Need Love.” The album reached No. 3 on the Billboard 200 and cemented his place as a commercial force. However, his third album, Walking with a Panther (1989), though commercially successful, drew criticism for being overly commercial.

In 1990, LL Cool J silenced critics with Mama Said Knock You Out. Produced by Marley Marl, the album was a triumphant return to form and earned him a Grammy Award. The title track became one of his signature songs, showcasing a fierce, revitalized energy. Throughout the 1990s and early 2000s, LL continued to adapt, embracing R&B influences in Mr. Smith (1995), which spawned hits like “Hey Lover” and “Doin’ It.” He maintained chart success with albums like Phenomenon (1997), G.O.A.T. (2000), and 10 (2002).

Beyond music, LL Cool J built a successful acting career. He appeared in films such as Deep Blue Sea, Any Given Sunday, S.W.A.T., and Last Holiday, and he starred in the CBS series NCIS: Los Angeles from 2009 to 2023. He also hosted five consecutive Grammy Awards and the Paramount Network’s Lip Sync Battle from 2015 to 2019.

LL Cool J’s new album “The FORCE’’ is set to release in 2024 marking his first Def Jam release after over a decade. While Rick Ross, Fat Joe, and Eminem join LL in hyping the album for singles “Murdergram Deux” and “Saturday Night Special”.

On another note, it’s no secret LL Cool J’s achievements in entertainment are groundbreaking in nature. He received the Kennedy Center Honors and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2017 and 2021 respectively, the former being the first rapper recipient making history. His contribution to pop and street rap earned him this iconic label and he continues to hold a special place in the hearts of fans from every corner of the world.
