Eurythmics Biography

Who are Eurythmics, and why are they significant? Eurythmics are the groundbreaking British duo of Scottish singer Annie Lennox, born on 25 December 1954 in Aberdeen, Scotland, and English musician and producer Dave Stewart, born on 9 September 1952 in Sunderland, England, who’s pop shape shifting, vivid imagery, and studio craft defined the sound and style of the eighties and beyond.

Lennox was from a working class Aberdeen home, educated at the Royal Conservatory, Aberdeen, and later at the Royal Academy of Music in London, where classical encountered a growing hunger for soul and art pop. Stewart came from a musical North East England family and played in teenage groups and sang singles on radios and records.

They first met in London in the mid seventies, initially as the Catch and later as the Tourists, where a professional collaboration coexisted alongside a personal relationship that later fell apart, yet musical chemistry was enhanced.

Chafed by fixed line ups and outside expectations, they set out in 1980 as Eurythmics to invent a flexible studio led project that could combine electronics, pop hooks, and avant garde frills.

The debut album In the Garden in 1981, recorded at Conny Plank’s studio in Cologne with guests drawn from the German experimental community, sketched the vision but broke no ground.

Financial pressure, disease, and gruelling toil followed as they lugged gear themselves, borrowed to set up an eight track studio above a frame shop in London, and discovered making limitation a spur to invention.

The big break came with Sweet Dreams in 1983, a modernist synth pop classic powered by androgynous charisma from Lennox and textural electronics from Stewart.

The title track topped the United States charts and propelled Lennox on to international magazine covers, while Love Is a Stranger and Here Comes the Rain Again proved they were bigger than one hit.

Touch in 1983 broadened the canvas with orchestral sequencing and confrontational video personalities, and by 1984 they were justified to warrant a motion picture soundtrack for Nineteen Eighty Four, even as label and director animosities later relegated that period.

Be Yourself Tonight in 1985 shifted focus to rhythm and blues and group dynamics, and enlisted responses from Aretha Franklin, Stevie Wonder, and Elvis Costello and provided their first United Kingdom number one single There Must Be an Angel.

Revenge in 1986 highlighted guitar dependent pop rock and toured worldwide. Savage in 1987 resumed dark programmed timbres and a salacious visual album directed by Sophie Muller, and while We Too Are One in 1989 ended that initial chapter with another United Kingdom chart topper. After nearly a decade at a reckless pace they entered a hiatus in 1990.

Lennox resumed a legendary solo career with Diva in 1992 and Medusa in 1995, while Stewart scored for film and collaborated with many others. The duo reformed for Peace in 1999 and a charitable intended Peacetour on behalf of Amnesty International and Greenpeace, and then reactivated for Ultimate Collection in 2005 and one time only concerts in 2014, 2019, and 2022.

Throughout these iterations they sold an estimated seventy five million records worldwide, reaped big awards, and were later inducted within the Songwriters Hall of Fame and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

The story is one of reinvention against duress, where individual estrangement did not end artistic cooperation, and where small room and simple equipment were a starting point for global pop that yet feels current and sleek and human and direct.
