Sir Elton Hercules John, a versatile singer, pianist, and composer, one of the most cherished musicians across the globe was born as Reginald Kenneth Dwight on the 25th of March 1947 in Pinner, Middlesex. He is awarded with numerous accolades owing to profoundly changing both pop and rock music for over six decades. His performance art is a blend of his inventive musicianship, showmanship, and creativity.
Growing up, like many children, music fascinated John. At the age of 3, he could play certain tunes by ear, and when he turned 11, he was awarded a scholarship at the Royal Academy of Music. John was taught classical piano which led him to become a fan of rock and roll due to practitioners like Elvis and Little Richard. His musical trajectory changed in the 1960s when he began blues and R&B alongside working as a session musician with the group bluesology.
One of the main reasons he is famous in pop culture is owing to the legendary partnership that followed with Bernie Taupin. Elton and Bernie began working together in 1967 after both replied to a Liberty Records ad. With their unique cadence they created hit records for various artists which subsequently led to Elton’s further solo projects commencing with a debut album Empty Sky (1969). But it was the self titled 1970 release album “Elton John” that truly launched his career after the global success gained for his track “Your Song”.
For Elton, the early 1970s marked the beginning of a golden era. With the release of Tumbleweed Connection, Honky Château, Madman Across the Water, and Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, he was now a worldwide superstar. His flamboyant costumes and dynamic piano gave him a steady spot on both U.K. and U.S charts. “Crocodile Rock”, his 1973 hit, was a landmark in his career as it was his first single to top the U.S. charts.
Despite professionally succeeding, John struggled personally with substance use and confusion regarding his sexuality. He was married briefly to Renate Blauel before publicly coming out as gay. He married his longtime partner David Furnish in 2014. John has claimed that his decision to become sober in 1990 was life saving and has credited it as life-saving.
Beyond the music world, John has become known as a philanthropist, particularly in the fight against AIDS. He founded the Elton John AIDS Foundation in 1992 which has raised over $600 million worldwide. He continues to actively support humanitarian purposes as well as advocating for equal right for LGBTQ+ individuals.
Equally important are Elton’s theatrical achievements. He wrote scores for musicals such as The Lion King, Aida, and Billy Elliot the Musical. He also won an Academy Award and a Grammy for “Can You Feel the Love Tonight” from The Lion King.
John started his three-year farewell tour in 2018, Farewell Yellow Brick Road, which ended in 2023. It was the highest grossing tour at the time. Though he retired from touring, he still records new music and occasionally makes appearances. He co-produced the 2019 biopic Rocketman, which was well received and reignited interest in his life and work.
He was knighted in 1998 and given the Companion of Honour in 2020. Elton John still stands as one of the most prominent figures in music history. Having sold over 300 million records and received honors spanning five decades, his legacy is unmatched in modern music.
