He mixes rock, folk, and heartland sounds, reflecting the hardship and aspirations of ordinary life. He didn’t become famous overnight, instead, it was the product of years of labor, self-exploration, and commitment to music.
Bruce Frederick Joseph Springsteen was born on September 23, 1949, in Long Branch, New Jersey. Raised in nearby Freehold Borough, he grew up in a working-class family. His father, Douglas, was a bus driver and struggled with mental health issues, while his mother, Adele, was a legal secretary and the main breadwinner of the household.
Bruce was the oldest of three children and was deeply influenced by his Catholic upbringing and the music he heard on the radio—particularly the raw energy of Elvis Presley and the poetic realism of Bob Dylan.
Bruce didn’t fit in much during his school years. At Freehold High School, he was a loner who often skipped events like graduation. He briefly attended Ocean County College but dropped out to pursue music full-time. His mother supported this dream early on by renting his first guitar. That gesture helped spark what would become a legendary musical career.
In the 1960s, Springsteen played with area groups such as The Castiles and Steel Mill before he assembled the E Street Band in the early ’70s. His debut albums, Greetings from Asbury Park, N.J. and The Wild, the Innocent & the E Street Shuffle, did little business at first but impressed reviewers.
It was with 1975’s Born to Run that he finally hit it big, appearing on magazine covers and radio stations across the country. Patriotic was the mistaken impression that greeted the title track and its anthem-like sound, although the song’s lyrics revealed bleak post-war America, hard hit and beaten down.
His private life attracted headlines too. He was married to actress Julianne Phillips in 1985, but the couple split in 1989. He started seeing Patti Scialfa, an E Street Band member, the same year and married her in 1991. They have three children and live in New Jersey.
