Blues Traveler Biography, Songs, Albums, Discography & Awards

Who are Blues Traveler? Why are they important? Blues Traveler is one of those rare bands that managed to blend blues, rock, and jam-band improvisation into a sound that’s both radio-friendly and fiercely rooted in live performance culture.

Formed in Princeton, New Jersey in 1987, the group came together when high school friends John Popper (vocals and harmonica) and Brendan Hill (drums) decided to start a band. Soon joined by guitarist Chan Kinchla and bassist Bobby Sheehan, the four-piece became a fixture on the New York club circuit.

Their relentless gigging and standout live shows caught the attention of A&M Records, launching a career that would include multi-platinum albums, Grammy wins, and a devoted fanbase. But the band’s story is more than hits—it’s one of perseverance, reinvention, and a deep love of live music that’s spanned more than three decades.

Blues Traveler started life as a garage band with various titles such as The Establishment and The Black Cat Jam. The original members—John Popper, born on March 29, 1967, in Chardon, Ohio; Brendan Hill, born on March 27, 1970; Chan Kinchla, born on May 29, 1969; and Bobby Sheehan, born on June 12, 1968—met in Princeton, New Jersey.

John Popper, the lead man for the band, grew up in a musical and creative family where his early experience with all manners of music enabled him to develop an abiding affection for harmonica playing and writing songs.

Upon completing high school, the band moved on to New York City to study in music schools—Popper, Hill, and Sheehan joined The New School while Kinchla attended NYU. Before long, however, they quit school to study music full time.

They achieved a big break when A&M Records signed them in 1989 following an impressive live show. Their 1990 self-titled debut revealed their unique blending of rock and blues, and the second one, Travelers and Thieves (1991), extended the depth.

But it was 1994’s four that catapulted them to stardom with the gargantuan success “Run-Around,” winning a Grammy award and being proclaimed the anthem for a generation. The band returned with Straight On till Morning (1997), going directly to platinum, and they became household faces on television as well as movie tracks during the 1990s.

But disaster struck in 1999 when bassist Bobby Sheehan died from a drug overdose. Rather than quit, however, Blues Traveler re-formed with Tad Kinchla (Chan’s younger brother) on bass and keyboards man Ben Wilson in a new era for the band.

Throughout the 2000s and 2010s, they issued a series of varied discs on independent labels, constantly re-inventing the band and continuing the popular July 4th concerts during Red Rocks Amphitheatre weekends.

John Popper’s health scare in 1999 and Sheehan’s death were defining moments that tested the band’s resilience. Popper underwent emergency heart surgery, later shedding over 200 pounds after undergoing gastric bypass surgery.

Through it all, the band pushed forward, releasing the blues cover album Traveler’s Blues in 2021, which earned them a Grammy nomination. In 2023, they followed up with Traveler’s Soul, a tribute to R&B classics.

Despite lineup changes, changing labels, and an evolving music landscape, Blues Traveler continues to tour and record, with a fan base that spans generations. Their legacy lies in their refusal to chase trends, instead relying on a commitment to musical honesty, jam-based experimentation, and the simple joy of live music.
