Alice Cooper Biography, Songs, Discography, Albums & Awards

Alice Cooper is an American rock singer widely considered one of the pioneers of shock rock. He was born on February 4, 1948, in Detroit, Michigan as Vincent Damon Furnier. Alongside the surgical masks, horror costumes, props such as a guillotine, fake blood, and boa constrictors that he used during his performances, he created a world of his own. Cooper is known to have transformed the concert experience together with the theatrics he performed on stage.

During Cooper’s junior high years, his family relocated to Phoenix, Arizona. He was enrolled at Cortez High School where he formed a parody Beatles group called the Earwigs with some of his track teammates. The band evolved into The Spiders and soon adopted the name Nazz. He is known to have “founded” the band Alice Cooper in 1968 which alongside his name was a striking contrast to the tame name. By 1969, he was performing with Glen Buxton, Michael Bruce, Dennis Dunaway, and Neal Smith who played guitar, rhythm guitar, bass, and drums respectively. They together made up the first Alice Cooper band.

The band’s first record label was Frank Zappa’s Straight Record. They did release an experimental album ‘Pretties for You’ which was a failure commercially. Regardless, the stage antics performed by cooper did garner media attention. He released ‘Love It to Death’ in 1971 along with the single ‘I’m Eighteen’ which marked the start of his growing career. Under Bob Ezrin’s production, the band was able to gain significant popularity with his mixture of hard rock and theatricality.

The group released multiple albums that were successful both critically and commercially in the span of 1971 to 1973. These albums include: “Killer (1971), School’s Out (1972), and Billion Dollar Babies (1973)”. Their stage performances included blood, executions, and a lot of grandiose blood which received both international praise and condemnation. The band then separated in 1975 after releasing “Muscle of Love.” Furnier then rebranded to “Alice Cooper,” and launched a solo career featuring a concept album titled “Welcome to My Nightmare” released in 1975.

Alice Cooper continued to refine his theatrical horror style with his solo work while also introducing the character “Steven” into his Nightmare concept. He battled alcoholism and drug addiction from the late 70s till early 80s, but made a strong comeback in 1989 with “Trash,” driven by the huge hit “Poison.” During the 90s and the 2000s, Cooper enjoyed extensive touring while producing a steady stream of new releases while embracing Christianity which helped him recover from long-term substance abuse.

Cooper has also made an impact beyond music when it comes to culture such as movies “Wayne’s World, Dark Shadows” where he had cameo roles, TV shows, and his own classic rock radio show, “Alice’s Attic.” He is known to have a sharp and kind sense of humor for someone who has such a strong public presence, that’s why his charitable works also stand out, particularly the Solid Rock Foundation helping teenagers express themselves artistically.

Cooper announced a reunion with the remaining members of the original Alice Cooper band in 2025 for The Revenge of Alice Cooper, which has been labeled as their first full band album in over five decades. Alice Cooper is still considered one of the most iconic rockartists, and is known for his incredible legacy that includes: tremendous musical innovation, mesmerizing musical performances, and unwavering show business grit.
